Sight — complete instructions

2. What this is

People mix two things. They are not the same.

1. This website. Pink House. The usual cream page. A pink button. A square about four inches by four inches on the right, below the menu. Colour and Sound change this page only. Other windows stay the same. Excel stays Excel. Mail stays Mail.
2. Windows on the whole PC. Narrator, Magnifier, contrast themes. Those can change every window. They can read Mail. They can read the desktop. Pink House will not start them.

The surprise in the email app was Windows talking, not the pink button. The pink button never reads Mail. If you want Mail read on purpose, that is lesson 8. If you want it stopped, that is lesson 1.

There is no Sight bill and no Sight license. JAWS and Fusion sell those. We do not. NVDA is a free screen reader for the whole PC if you want that later. This book is Pink House Sight.

Three places, one story:

1. The pink button turns help on and off for this website.
2. The 4×4 square on the right, below the menu, is Colour, Sound, and the link to this book.
3. This book is the complete instruction. The live switches are in All switches.

3. Coach script — ten minutes

Sit beside the person. Read the cream boxes in order. Do not explain around them. Do not install Windows software. Do not start Narrator. If they already know a part, skip it. If they are tired, stop after Colour.

Print this page if you want the cream boxes on paper. You do not have to transfer a pile of knowledge. The boxes are the knowledge.

If you are CNIB or an occupational therapist, use the coach door first. It names two installs — the shortcut and the thoughtware — and a leave-the-room test. This cream script is the longer version after that.

4. The pink button

The pink button turns help on and off. Off means this page stays cream and nothing is reading it. On means you can use Colour and Sound. The same button is on this sheet.

Off

1. Press the pink button. A ring appears. Aid is on.
2. Press it again. The ring goes. Aid is off. Colour goes. Sound stops.
3. It does not start Narrator. It does not change Excel. It does not change Mail.

5. Colour — this page only

Black page. Gold headings. White body. Only this website. Key: Alt + V.

1. Pink button on.
2. Press Colour.
3. If you hate it, press Colour again, or press the pink button Off.

If the whole computer went black and gold, that is not this switch. Go back to Stop first.

6. Sound — this page only

The browser reads this page. Same button stops it. Key: Alt + L.

On this instruction book, Read this part works even if the pink button is off, so you can hear the lesson. On the rest of Pink House, Sound waits for the pink button.

1. Press Read this part, or press Sound on the front page.
2. Press the same button to stop.
3. If the browser asks to speak, allow it for this site.

Sound will not read Mail. Sound will not read Excel. If every window is talking, that is Narrator. Use Ctrl + Win + Enter.

7. Make it bigger

This is the browser, not a Pink House install.

1. Hold Ctrl and tap +. The page gets larger.
2. Do it again if you need more.
3. Ctrl + 0 puts it back.

To make all of Windows larger: Settings → Accessibility → Text size. Slide it up.

Magnifier is Windows. Open it with Win + +. Close it with Win + Esc. Pink House does not launch it.

8. Mail and other windows

This is the powerful part. Treat it as a tool, not a surprise.

Windows can read your email. It can also read every other window at the same time. That is why it felt like a lot. Pink House Sound will never do that.

If Mail is already talking and you did not ask

1. Hold Ctrl + Win + Enter.
2. If it is still talking: Settings → Accessibility → Narrator → Off.

If you want an email read on purpose — safest first

Outlook on Windows, or Outlook on the web, with a Microsoft address:

1. Open the message.
2. Choose View, then Immersive Reader.
3. Press Play at the bottom. Pause stops it. Close Immersive Reader when you are done.

Immersive Reader is made for one message. It does not follow you into Excel.

Gmail, or Mail in the browser:

1. Open the message in Microsoft Edge (the blue e).
2. Look for the book icon, or the menu item Enter Immersive Reader.
3. Press the speaker. Stop with pause. Close Immersive Reader when you are done.

That is the same path we use for a tired Google Doc: listen in Edge, then leave.

Narrator — only if you choose it

Narrator reads Mail. It also reads the desktop, Settings, and the next window you open. Pink House will not start it.

1. Memorise the off key first: Ctrl + Win + Enter.
2. The first time, sit with someone.
3. On only from Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Narrator.
4. When you are done, the same off key, then confirm Narrator is Off in Settings.

9. Google Docs

Docs has its own complete list. It was there first. This book does not replace it.

If you only remember three things for Docs:

1. Make your own copy.
2. Zoom.
3. When the eyes quit, download a PDF and listen in Edge Immersive Reader.

Open the Google Docs list.

10. Put this on your website

This is not Windows. This is one line on a website you own. No billing. No license. Colour and Sound will change that site’s page, not Mail, not Excel.

1. Try it first on pinkhouse.tech. The square is about four inches by four inches.
2. Paste this line just before </body> on your site:

3. Reload. A pink button appears in the corner. Click it for the same 4×4 widget. Hide puts it back to the pink button.

Sample, not Pink House: a fake bakery with the widget. Cost to the person using it, and the same words about no license: Sight on your website.

11. If we put something on this PC

Earlier work installed a Windows helper named Pink House Sight. It could change the whole computer. It could start at logon. It should be off. This site will not put it back on.

Off — remove from this PC

1. Download the zip.
2. Unzip it.
3. Double-click TURN-IT-OFF.bat.
4. If Windows is still talking: Ctrl + Win + Enter.
5. If the screen is still black and gold everywhere: Settings → Accessibility → Contrast themes → None.
6. If Magnifier is open: Win + Esc.

More on that leftover, in the same words: Remove what we put on this PC.

For a technician only: it was a run key named PinkHouseSight, a protocol named pinkhouse-vision, and files in the local app data folder under PinkHouse\Vision. The zip clears those. Users do not need that sentence.

13. If something is wrong

1. Colour and Sound do nothing. Press the pink button first. They only work after help is on.
2. This page is cream, but the whole PC is black and gold. That is Windows contrast, not Colour. Use the contrast keys in Stop first.
3. Sound does not speak. Use Edge or Chrome. Allow speech if the browser asks. Try Read this part on this book — that one works even if the pink button is off.
4. Every window talks, including Mail. Ctrl + Win + Enter. Then Settings → Accessibility → Narrator → Off.
5. A panel named Pink House Sight comes back after logon. Use the Off zip. We will not put it back on from this page.
6. Apple. Not this set yet. Colour and Sound on this website still work in Safari. Windows keys do not.

14. What this is not

1. Not medical advice. Not an eye test. Not a diagnosis.
2. Not a Windows install. A website widget is a different thing, and only if they ask. See lesson 10.
3. Not JAWS, not NVDA, not ZoomText, not Fusion, not Be My Eyes. Those are other programs. NVDA is free if you want a whole-PC screen reader later.
4. Not a Sight license, not a subscription, not a key. Users are not billed.
5. Not TokenScope. That is a different Pink House product.
6. Not a way to start Narrator. Off only.
7. Not a change to Mail, Excel, or the desktop, unless you use Windows yourself.
8. Not finished for Apple as a whole-computer helper.
